I. PURPOSE OF THE POSITION

The Conservation Finance Specialist is responsible for designing and implementing sustainable financing strategies for conservation efforts under the Peusangan Elephant Conservation Initiative (PECI) Program. The role includes researching and developing innovative financing mechanisms, managing sustainable finance portfolios, and implementing financing strategies to achieve PECI conservation goals. This includes, but is not limited to, identifying fundraising opportunities, managing resource mobilization, and conducting investment risk profiling to support the long-term financing of the PECI Program.

We are currently hiring for positions based in Peusangan, Aceh and South Jakarta.

II. ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Responsible for implementing the conservation finance strategy through research, financing mechanism design, and the development and management of financial strategies. The position is responsible for the following:

A. Develop Financing Mechanisms

Design and implement innovative financial products and mechanisms that promote sustainable conservation outcomes and attract funding, such as Elephant Bonds, Sustainable Conservation Funds, Payments for Ecosystem Services (PES), and other impact finance instruments.

  • Conduct desk reviews and stock-taking of conservation financing approaches implemented across the region.
  • Develop and recommend innovative financing instruments suitable for implementation within the Project.
  • B. Financial Analysis & Risk Management
  • Conduct financial analysis and risk assessments for conservation projects and investment opportunities.
  • Evaluate financial feasibility and investment viability to support decision-making.
  • C. Stakeholder Engagement

Collaborate with governments, NGOs, private investors, financial institutions, and local communities to secure funding and support conservation initiatives.

  • Ensure financial mechanisms are aligned with conservation objectives and stakeholder expectations.
  • D. Investment Strategy & Management
  • Develop investment strategies and investment pipelines for conservation initiatives.
  • Manage capital allocation and oversee the deployment of public and private funds into conservation projects.
  • Coordinate the development of financing inputs, including assessments, cost models, management plans, and business plans.
  • E. Technical Assistance & Capacity Building
  • Provide technical assistance to government agencies, community organizations, and private sector partners.
  • Build stakeholder capacity to strengthen sustainable conservation financing practices.
  • F. Project Development & Implementation

Lead the development and implementation of pilot projects in areas such as marine conservation, landscape restoration, or other conservation initiatives.

III. SAFEGUARD, RISK MANAGEMENT & COMPLIANCE

Implement all activities with due regard for Human Rights, Gender Equality, and inclusive conservation, in accordance with WWF-Indonesia’s standards and values.

  • Maintain the confidentiality of organizational data and information and operate within delegated authority.
  • Contribute to the identification, analysis, and assessment of organizational risks.
  • Support the implementation of risk mitigation strategies in accordance with organizational policies.

IV. QUALIFICATIONS

A. Education & Experience

Bachelor’s Degree in Finance, Business Administration, Economics, Environmental Finance, or a related field (Master’s Degree preferred but not mandatory).

Minimum 5 years of experience in financial modelling, business analysis, investment planning, and/or due diligence assessments, preferably within the sustainability or conservation sector.

  • Experience in developing impact investment strategies is highly desirable.
  • B. Technical & Specific Knowledge
  • Strong understanding of sustainable finance markets and mechanisms.

Knowledge of impact investing, biodiversity-based financial products (e.g., bonds), blended finance mechanisms, and public funding structures.

  • Strong financial modelling, financial analysis, and risk management capabilities.
  • Experience in preparing professional business plans, investment plans, and executive presentations.
  • Strong interest and experience in biodiversity conservation and environmental sustainability.
  • Knowledge of climate change, sustainable land management, and ecosystem services.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Ability to communicate complex financial and environmental concepts to both technical and non-technical stakeholders, including conservation practitioners, community leaders, investors, market representatives, and colleagues.

  • Experience developing external communication materials.
  • Ability to work effectively in a collaborative, client-focused environment with diverse stakeholders and partners.
  • Strong analytical capabilities with the ability to develop practical and innovative solutions to complex challenges.
  • Strong project management skills with the ability to deliver projects on time and within budget.
  • Highly organized with exceptional attention to detail while managing multiple workstreams.
  • Self-starter with an entrepreneurial mindset.
  • Comfortable working in ambiguous, fast-paced, and evolving environments.
  • Familiarity with conservation investment tools, GIS software, and financial reporting systems.
  • Professional certifications such as CFA, ESG, or related credentials are considered an advantage.
