Senior Backend API Engineer

Design and develop RESTful APIs and backend services that other teams and partners can rely on.

Build scalable and resilient distributed systems, including patterns such as circuit breakers, rate limiting, and timeout budgeting to keep services stable under load.

• Optimise API performance and latency using techniques such as concurrency, connection pooling, caching, and load balancing.
• Design secure authentication and authorisation mechanisms, including JWT and OAuth2 based flows.

Maintain data consistency across services and databases, including handling failures in multi-step or multi-database operations and designing APIs to be safely retried (idempotency).

Collaborate closely with frontend developers, architects, and DevOps engineers as part of a small, hands-on delivery team, working alongside a lead architect rather than owning a whole system solo.

• Write automated tests (unit and integration) and use monitoring and logging tools to troubleshoot issues in production.
• Conduct code reviews and mentor other engineers.
• Contribute to architectural decisions and engineering best practices.
• 6+ years of hands-on backend development experience (be ready to talk through specific projects and your individual contribution to each).

Strong experience building and operating enterprise APIs, including performance tuning, concurrency handling, circuit breakers, and rate limiting.

Experience with Golang, .NET, Node.js, Java, or similar backend technologies (Golang experience is well regarded for this engagement).

Solid understanding of relational database fundamentals (ACID properties), handling consistency across multiple services or databases, and avoiding common performance issues such as the N+1 query problem.

• Strong knowledge of API security (OAuth2, JWT, OpenID Connect) and idempotent API design.
• Experience with SQL and NoSQL databases.

Experience with cloud platforms (AWS preferred for this project; GCP or Azure also considered), including container-based deployment (Docker, ECS, or Kubernetes) and CI/CD pipelines.

Understanding of microservices, including gRPC and REST-based service-to-service communication.

Experience writing automated tests (unit and integration) and using observability tools (e.g. Datadog, New Relic, CloudWatch) to diagnose issues.

• Comfortable working as part of a small, collaborative delivery team alongside a lead architect and other engineers, not as a sole developer.
• Professional English communication skills (spoken and written) are mandatory.
• Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to work independently in a remote consulting environment.
